Unnatural disaster | December 2, 2025

Hello reader,

Amid a major catastrophe like the one unfolding in Sumatra, we often hear clashing narratives from the governments and actual experts in their respective fields.

While one may blame factors beyond our control, the other almost always gets to say “told you so” in the end. But by then, it’s already too late.

In today’s edition, we look at the extreme weather vs unchecked deforestation narrative in determining the cause of the Sumatra devastation. Hopefully we can learn to reduce the latter in order to mitigate the former in the future.
