Sumatra death toll surpasses 1,000 | December 15, 2025

Casualties continue to mount

Hello reader,

It’s been more than two weeks since floods and landslides began to devastate Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. As of today, the death toll from the dozens of affected districts across the three provinces has exceeded 1,000. As the affected regions try to pick themselves up from the devastation, more extreme weather may hamper immediate recovery efforts.

In other news, West Java has placed a moratorium on new housing permits to mitigate the threat of hydrometeorological disasters, while two marriages involving politicians are in the spotlight.

Cheers,

Andra
