Rupiah takes a hit | March 9, 2026

Middle East warfare takes toll on Indonesian currency, economy

Hello reader,

The rupiah breached IDR 17,000 per US dollar today, as the economic impact from the US/Israel conflict with Iran on Indonesia continues to become more apparent. The most crucial factor in all of this is the global price of oil, which has spiked recently, to say the least.

Expect austerity measures from the government, even if that means sacrificing some aspects of their beloved Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. All that, and more, in today’s edition of Nusantara Notes.

To a wonderful week ahead!

Cheers,

Andra
