DPR passes Penal Adjustment Bill

Hello reader,

At the turn of the year, Indonesia will have its refreshed Criminal Code (KUHP), for better or worse. Today, the House of Parliament (DPR) passed a bill that paves the way for the revised KUHP’s implementation.

If you recall, the KUHP revision bill was passed in 2023 amid massive backlash over concerns ranging from expanded police authority to weaker anti-corruption sentences to criminalization of extramarital sex. That new era in Indonesia’s criminal justice is right in front of us.

More on that below, plus the day’s top stories including updates from Sumatra, a great victory over rivals in badminton, and a popular “blue film” creator getting arrested in Bali.

Cheers,

Andra
