New New Order? | March 20, 2025

RUU TNI passed

Hello reader,

Today is being described as yet another dark day for Indonesian democracy. Despite widespread public resistance, the House of Representatives passed the contentious amendments to the Indonesian Military Law (RUU TNI) today.

Among the grim takes is that the law could roll back democratic gains Indonesia made in the nearly three decades since the fall of the New Order regime, particularly by giving the military more power to undermine civilian supremacy. Was any of this surprising given our elected president’s history?

Long live liberty.

Cheers,

Andra
