Indonesia seeks to eradicate practice

Even in 2024, some outdated and downright dangerous medical practices are still carried out around the world. In Indonesia, one such practice is female genital mutilation (FGM), which is so prevalent due to religious and cultural customs.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), FGM has no medical benefits for girls and women. Conversely, it can cause severe bleeding and a multitude of complications, including in childbirth.

Here’s hoping the government, armed with a new law that all but prohibits FGM, can eradicate the practice. More on that story below.
