DPR passes law protecting domestic workers | April 21, 2026

Hello readers,

Twenty-two years since it was first drafted, the House of Parliament (DPR) today finally passed the Domestic Workers Protection Bill into law. The symbolism of it being approved right on Kartini Day was not lost on anyone.

The fact of the matter is that millions of Indonesian domestic workers, most of whom are female, have been vulnerable to all sorts of exploitation for decades, be it domestically or abroad. The new law will set out to professionalize domestic work, as well as ensure more balance in the relations between employers and workers. Let’s hope it does just that.
